San Diego County's Rare Thornmint (Acanthomintha ilicifolia)
KodachromeTransparency Taken by W.P. Armstrong, Spring 1978
Not only is this one of the rarest wildflowers in southern California, it is also one of the most unique. Of all the 6800 species in the mint family (Lamiaceae), thornmint is one of the few species with spines. In San Diego County it grows in heavy clay soils derived from gabbro. Sadly, most populations have been virtually extirpated by urban sprawl.
