The large penny is a fake.  The minute fruits are real pomes remarkably similar to tiny apples. They are
produced by Heteromeles arbutifolia, a native California shrub in the same family as apples.  In fact,
the name heteromeles means "different apple."   They even taste and turn brown (oxidize) like apples.
